Here we cultivate, here we live

Spanning one square kilometre, the Villota estate is both unique and extraordinarily diverse in terms of orientation, soils and grape varieties. On the banks of the Ebro River, on the edge of Rioja Alavesa and close to Logroño, one of the world’s wine capitals, Villota is the origin of great white, rosé and red wines. An estate that embodies character, purity, harmony and honesty.

Above all, Villota is a place we have explored, cultivated and learned to love for almost a century. A place of vineyards and life where we always welcome visitors with a glass of wine.

THE ENVIRONMENT

Between the Ebro River and the slopes of kermes oak

The curve of the meander defines Villota’s geoclimatic diversity. Within a distance of just one kilometre, we transition from the shaded riverside forest of the Ebro to the sparsely wooded Mediterranean slopes of La Mesa hill, home to protected kermes oak. Three large vineyard terraces, separated by slopes of wild holm oak, lie between them.

SOILS

The deepest heritage

The jewel of Villota lies in the estate’s soils. Born of a lengthy geological process, they are shaped by the Alpine orogeny and, above all, by the dynamics of the Ebro River over more than 25 million years.

Our soils are also a microcosm of Rioja’s lithology. On the highest terrace, clay-limestone predominates, typical of Rioja Alavesa. The broad middle terrace combines clays and pebbles, demanding labour-intensive viticulture yet offering exceptional quality potential. On the lowest terrace, closest to the Ebro’s banks, the sands bear witness to the river’s most recent energy.

VITICULTURE

The connection with the vineyard

We practise dedicated and resilient viticulture, following organic principles and adopting a minimal-intervention approach. We till just enough to maintain the balance between the soil life, the cycle of the vines and the climatic conditions of each vintage, always in harmony with the vineyard.
